NFL Teams of All Time

When it comes to ranking teams and picking the best football NFL teams of all time, you’re bound to face resistance from fans. So what do you do when a Cowboys fan tells you their team is the greatest ever? Everyone has their own opinion, so we decided to give ours. We decided to look at some of the best teams from the past. The criteria we cared about most in deciding the rankings were championships won. Championships can be the end-all, but it is a requirement for excellence, period!

Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys were founded in 1960 as an expansion team. Despite having mediocre quarterbacks throughout their history, the Cowboys have won five Super Bowls and are considered one of the best teams in NFL history. In fact, the Cowboys have been called “America’s Team” because so many people from across the United States follow them. Teams from every NFL division except for the AFC East have faced off against the Cowboys in a Super Bowl.

The Dallas Cowboys are one of only two teams that have never had a losing season in franchise history. They also own eight division titles, and they’ve been to eight Super Bowls, winning five of them. The Dallas Cowboys are tied with the Pittsburgh Steelers for most Super Bowl appearances by any team in history. The team has also made 22 playoff appearances since its inception, which is second only to the Pittsburgh Steelers’ 23 playoff appearances over that same time period. Their offensive line is considered by many to be the best in NFL history, but they’ve also had good defensive lines over their time as well. The Dallas Cowboys have been to eight NFC Championships and won five of them.

San Francisco 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers are a professional American football team located in the San Francisco Bay Area. They compete in the National Football League as a member of the league’s National Football Conference West division. The team currently plays its home games at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, located 45 miles (72 km) southeast of San Francisco in the heart of Silicon Valley. Since 1988, the 49ers have been headquartered in Santa Clara.

The team was founded in 1946 as a charter member of the All-America Football Conference and joined the NFL in 1949 when the leagues merged. The 49ers were the first major league professional sports franchise based in San Francisco. The name “49ers” comes from the prospectors who arrived in Northern California in the 1849 Gold Rush. The team is legally and corporately registered as the San Francisco Forty-Niners. The team began to play at Kezar Stadium in San Francisco before moving across town to Candlestick Park in 1970 and then to Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara in 2014.

The San Francisco 49ers have been one of the most dominant teams in the NFL since 1980. They’ve won five Super Bowls and have had numerous Hall of Fame players play for them. There is no doubt that they are one of the greatest teams of all time.

Green Bay Packers

The Green Bay Packers have been the most successful professional football team ever. The Packers have won more total games than any team, including the Chicago Bears. And they’ve been the most consistent too – winning 14 or more games in seven different seasons and only failing to make the playoffs 18 times in their history.

The Packers’ first season was 1919, and they’ve had just six losing seasons since 1933. That’s a remarkable feat considering some teams lose that many games in a single year (we’re looking at you, Cleveland Browns).

Green Bay has won 13 NFL championships, including four Super Bowls and nine NFL titles (before the Super Bowl era).

The team is owned by the Green Bay Packers, Inc., a non-profit corporation with no stockholders that is controlled by fans. The team’s president is Mark Murphy, its general manager is Brian Gutekunst and its head coach is Matt LaFleur.

Seattle Seahawks

The Seattle Seahawks are a professional American football franchise based in Seattle, Washington. The Seahawks compete in the National Football League as a member club of the league’s National Football Conference West division. They joined the NFL in 1976 as an expansion team. The Seahawks are owned by Paul Allen and are currently coached by Pete Carroll. Since 2002, the Seahawks have played their home games at CenturyLink Field, located south of downtown Seattle. The Seahawks previously played home games in the Kingdome (1976–1999) and Husky Stadium (1994, 2000–2001).

Seattle is the only team to have played in both conference championship games (AFC and NFC) and, along with the New Orleans Saints, one of two teams to have won conference championships in both conferences. They have appeared in three Super Bowls: losing 21–10 to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XL, defeating the Denver Broncos 43–8 for their first championship in Super Bowl XLVIII, and losing 28–24 to the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLIX. The Seahawks fans have been referred to collectively as the “12th Man”, “12th Fan”, or “12s”.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The 2021 season was the Tampa Bay Buccaneers‘ 46th in the National Football League, their 26th playing their home games at Raymond James Stadium, and they’re second under head coach Bruce Arians.

The Buccaneers updated their uniforms for the first time since 2013 and also added an alternate uniform that they wore during Weeks 1 and 2 of the season. The team improved on its 7–9 record from 2020, finishing 11–5 and clinching a playoff berth for the first time since 2007. This was also the first winning season since 2016.

In the playoffs, Tampa Bay defeated Washington and New Orleans on the road to advance to Super Bowl LV, where they defeated defending champion Kansas City 31–9. This gave them their second Super Bowl championship after winning their first in 2002 (and becoming only the third team ever to win a Super Bowl at home). As of 2021, this is the last season where an NFL team finished with a perfect 4–0 record in road playoff games.

Following their Super Bowl victory, Tom Brady became one of only two players to win seven Super Bowl rings along with former teammate Charles Haley. Three other players had won six: Brady’s former teammate Adam Vinatieri, Matt Light, and Mike Lodish.

Cleveland Browns

The Cleveland Browns are a professional football team based in Cleveland, Ohio. They are members of the North Division of the American Football Conference (AFC) in the National Football League (NFL). The team began to play in 1946 as a charter member of the All-America Football Conference (AAFC) and joined the NFL as part of the AAFC-NFL merger in 1950.

The Browns have won four AAFC championships, four NFL championships, and one AFL championship. They have had many legendary players, including Jim Brown, and legendary coaches, including Paul Brown and Bill Belichick. The team has won five league championships, three by virtue of winning three NFL Championship Games between 1950 and 1955, and two by winning Super Bowls XXVIII (1992 season) and XXXIII (1998 season). The Browns also reached the championship game in each of their first ten years of existence in the AAFC but lost all ten games. From 1999 to the present, they have suffered through an NFL record 13 consecutive losing seasons.

Arizona Cardinals

The Arizona Cardinals are a professional American football team based in the Phoenix metropolitan area. The Cardinals compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member of the league’s National Football Conference (NFC) West division.

The Cardinals were founded as the Morgan Athletic Club in 1898, and are the oldest continuously run professional football team in the United States.

Since resuming operations in 1999, the Browns have struggled to find success. They have only had three championship seasons (2002, 2007, and 2020), two playoff games (2002 and 2020), and one playoff win (2020), winning less than a third of the games and in 2017 only the team was second in NFL history (after the 2008 Detroit Lions) to have a 0-16 season.
